00:47 <longnoserob|m/h> moin!

05:37 <runxiyu> how does the hackint matrix bridge work

05:38 *** Joins: runxiyu|m/h (~runxiyuen@fd1a:6295:5133::f7e1)

05:55 <f_[x]> runxiyu: according to a hackint staffer it is the most time consuming thing to maintain

05:56 <f_[x]> but it's just matrix-appservice-irc

06:11 <runxiyu|m/h> hnmmm

06:12 <runxiyu|m/h> I'm using matrix because there's no usable iOS IRC client and I need to talk to IRL friends who use iOS a lot

06:23 <f_[x]/h> runxiyu|m: there is one

06:23 <f_[x]/h> Textual?

06:23 <runxiyu|m/h> that's for macOS

06:23 <runxiyu|m/h> and it's nonfree and paid

06:24 <f_[x]/h> Ah, and no I'm sure it's for iOS

06:24 <f_[x]/h> thelounge webapp?

06:24 <runxiyu|m/h> i have an ios device and i can confirm it's not in the app store

06:24 <f_[x]/h> Oh I have better

06:24 <f_[x]/h> Goguma

06:24 <runxiyu|m/h> yeah webapp... yeah no

06:24 <runxiyu|m/h> goguma is really glitchy

06:25 <f_[x]/h> How so?

06:25 <runxiyu|m/h> bleh

06:25 <runxiyu|m/h> can't really express it

06:25 <f_[x]/h> worked fine last time I used it

06:25 <runxiyu|m/h> duplicate messages

06:25 <f_[x]/h> It gets new improvements every now and then

06:25 <runxiyu|m/h> unable to send messages sometimes

06:26 <runxiyu|m/h> very weird interface on iPad

06:26 <f_[x]/h> runxiyu|m: oh that is being worked on

06:26 <f_[x]/h> There's less (none?) duplicates now

06:26 <runxiyu|m/h> i still see them

06:26 <f_[x]/h> report to #Goguma@LC

06:27 <runxiyu|m/h> ive done so

06:27 <runxiyu|m/h> and i dont have the time to file a report

06:27 <f_[x]/h> but really I doubt you'll be able to find a free ios irc client

06:27 <f_[x]/h> because of the appstore's restrictions

06:27 <runxiyu|m/h> yep, thats the issue

06:27 <runxiyu|m/h> well

06:27 <runxiyu|m/h> ElementX is a pretty good Matrix client imo

06:27 <runxiyu|m/h> Element sucks though

06:27 <f_[x]/h> goguma has a license exception specifically for ios

06:28 <f_[x]/h> runxiyu|m: never tried EleX and frankly...

06:28 <f_[x]/h> matrix--

06:28 -eggdrop/h- [karma] self karma is a selfish pursuit.

06:28 *** f_[x]/h is now known as funderscore/h

06:28 <funderscore/h> matrix--

06:28 -eggdrop/h- [karma] 'matrix' now has -31 karma!

06:28 <runxiyu|m/h> https://github.com/element-hq/element-x-ios

06:28 <runxiyu|m/h> matrix--

06:28 -eggdrop/h- [karma] 'matrix' now has -32 karma!

06:28 <runxiyu|m/h> but it's better than WeChat

06:28 <funderscore/h> and the matrix irc bridge isn't any better currently really

06:29 <runxiyu|m/h> yeah

06:29 <funderscore/h> you need to be ready to maintain it all week

06:29 <funderscore/h> a hackint staffer has sometimes expressed some annoyance when matrix stuff doesn't work for no reason

06:30 <funderscore/h> so I think it's better to just report bugs and such to goguma going forward

06:30 <funderscore/h> elementX is not an irc client

06:30 <runxiyu|m/h> i know

06:31 <funderscore/h> runxiyu|m but what about xmpp?

06:31 <runxiyu|m/h> i'd write one in swiftui if i had the time

06:31 <runxiyu|m/h> but i dont

06:31 <funderscore/h> there's a bridge for rx already and you self-host xmpp yourself already

06:31 <runxiyu|m/h> no usable xmpp clients on ios

06:31 <funderscore/h> o rly?

06:32 <funderscore/h> https://momi.ca/xmpp.html

06:32 <funderscore/h> "IPhone" section

06:33 <runxiyu|m/h> > in app purchases

06:33 <runxiyu|m/h> hmmm

06:33 <runxiyu> i'm on laptop now

06:34 <runxiyu|m/h> funderscore: test replies

06:34 <runxiyu> oh

06:34 <runxiyu> the replies look realtively good

06:34 <JAA/h> > how does the hackint matrix bridge work

06:34 <funderscore/h> replies work ok when replying in a short time

06:34 <JAA/h> s/how //

06:34 <funderscore/h> what JAA said ^

06:34 <runxiyu|m/h> <f_[x]> "runxiyu: there is one" <- reply to message from 10 minutes ago

06:34 <runxiyu> bleh

06:34 <runxiyu> i mean

06:34 <runxiyu> it's not *terrible*

06:34 <runxiyu> but it's not how i'd like it to be either

06:34 <funderscore/h> the 'preview' is tiny

06:35 <funderscore/h> very small

06:35 <JAA/h> It's not entirely useless, I guess?

06:35 <funderscore/h> slightly useless

06:35 <JAA/h> So not quite as bad as EFnet's webchat, for example.

06:35 <funderscore/h> if your matrix nick happens to be longer

06:35 <JAA/h> But then again, that's EFnet.

06:35 <runxiyu|m/h> efnet has a webchat?

06:35 <funderscore/h> it's very useless

06:35 <JAA/h> I don't know if it does. It used to be broken for months at a time.

06:35 <funderscore/h> JAA: I'm grateful that efnet doesn't have a matrix bridge

06:36 <runxiyu|m/h> that sounds awful

06:37 <funderscore/h> runxiyu|m: try replying to a long message

06:37 <JAA/h> Oh yeah, and it also silently truncated messages, which was great.

06:37 <funderscore/h> JAA: the oftc webchat does as well

06:37 <JAA/h> The Lounge instead apparently splits them without showing you where they get split, which is equally great.

06:38 <funderscore/h> runxiyu|m: also try sending a message that is 6 lines long

06:39 <runxiyu|m/h> 1... (full message at <https://matrix.hackint.org/_irc/v1/media/download/AQYN43pkroV-JS-NbIVzZkXgECKijDVO1hRByyozaxJXh_z1yupbscoRLpnDZnn3BGwbXu1tJqmgRpORRPMUwUFCfcFZK7BAAGhhY2tpbnQub3JnL3lCeWZub3p1bUdNQVNVaktxdmxiUGNaaA>)

06:39 <Elestren> Hello, please refrain from sending multiline messages. They get sent as a link on IRC, which is annoying for IRC users. Remember that most of us are joined on IRC and not on Matrix. Thank you.

06:39 <funderscore/h> and try sending an image

06:39 <runxiyu> bruh

06:39 * runxiyu|m/h posted a file: (3KiB) < https://matrix.hackint.org/_irc/v1/media/download/AQDQb4NGd2KokVFb5dbJ-LC8Armsbna58l7fyaby8gmyU7iGW8bbjzfDQQCto6dDzdo8tMo0c0E7JS8aySFb_jRCfcFZMFhwAGVudnMubmV0Lzg5OTZhOWVjMTA2ZmUwOWQwZGI1NzFiNjc3NmY0YzgxNjA3NjdhNmYxODQ3ODkwNDQ1MjA4NjQ5NzI4 >

06:40 <JAA/h> At least the links don't break after an hour now. lol

06:40 <funderscore/h> see how horrible they look like?

06:40 <runxiyu> those are... very long links

06:40 <funderscore/h> yeah the links used to break after an hour

06:41 <funderscore/h> and on oftc they used to break after 8 hours, until I asked the bridge admins (matrix.org) to higher the insane limit

06:42 <funderscore/h> runxiyu: do you still want a matrix to rx bridge

06:44 *** funderscore/h is now known as f_[x]/h

06:44 <runxiyu|m/h> well yeah

06:44 <f_[x]/h> ok

06:46 <f_[x]/h> > given what resources we spend for the whole irc network

06:46 <f_[x]/h> > the matrix bridge runs circles around that infrastructure

06:46 <f_[x]/h> > compute, memory, disk, network

06:46 <f_[x]/h> > and most of all maintenance

06:46 <f_[x]/h> runxiyu: ^ Have fun

06:47 <f_[x]/h> Let's do this as an experiment to see how well it works, if it does at all

06:47 <f_[x]/h> the former vern.cc bridge broke shortly after it went up IIRC

06:47 <f_[x]/h> and in the end vern.cc gave up

06:49 <f_[x]/h> But I am not hosting this on my infra (unlike the xmpp bridge)

06:49 <f_[x]/h> my server would probably die because of matrix

06:52 <JAA/h> vern.cc >:-(

06:55 <f_[x]/h> JAA: heh

06:55 <f_[x]/h> For bridging their channels to irc they use a very old and unmaintained and buggy bridge I wrote

06:56 <f_[x]/h> even I no longer use it

06:57 <f_[x]/h> JAA: andrewyu.org used to host matrix for about a week

06:57 <JAA/h> My angry face isn't even about Matrix.

06:58 <f_[x]/h> ah

06:58 <f_[x]/h> About what then?

06:58 <f_[x]/h> the psf.lt-vern.cc drama stuff?

06:58 <JAA/h> vern.cc has crashed several AB jobs because it redirects AB to a 1 TiB speedtest file based on the UA.

06:58 <f_[x]/h> sucks

06:59 <f_[x]/h> so cannot be archived? Or what

06:59 <JAA/h> There's a public Git repo that allegedly contains the nginx config, and it doesn't even contain that rule.

06:59 <JAA/h> It can be archived when targeted directly. The problem is when there are random links to vern.cc on other sites.

07:00 <f_[x]/h> really sucks.

07:00 <JAA/h> On direct jobs, we can just switch the UA to something that doesn't get this shitty treatment.

07:00 <f_[x]/h> you may want to bring it up on their tilde.chat irc channel

07:00 <JAA/h> This is why I lean more towards 'fuck using appropriate UAs, just go with a popular browser' every day.

07:00 <Elestren> Swearing goes to /dev/null, thanks!

07:01 <f_[x]/h> what was the useragent?

07:01 <JAA/h> Which is sad but the path of least resistance, apparently.

07:02 <JAA/h> Well, the UA varies, but the default one is `ArchiveTeam ArchiveBot/%s (wpull %s) and not Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/42.0.2311.90 Safari/537.36` with varying version numbers in the %s.

07:03 <f_[x]/h> it doesn't like `ArchiveBot` I guess

07:03 <JAA/h> It probably matches 'bot' or something.

07:03 <JAA/h> Or was this the one that specifically detected ArchiveTeam or ArchiveBot?

07:03 <f_[x]/h> hmmm

07:03 <f_[x]/h> could be that it matches "bot"

07:03 <f_[x]/h> most likely

07:04 <JAA/h> Yeah, it matched ^ArchiveTeam according to my tests in August.

07:04 <f_[x]/h> Oh vern.cc really?

07:04 <f_[x]/h> come on

07:04 <f_[x]/h> why won't you let us archive your stuff

07:04 <JAA/h> That is still the case.

07:05 <JAA/h> ArchiveBot works, ArchiveTea works, ArchiveTeam gets that 307.

07:05 <JAA/h> curl -sv -A ArchiveTeam https://vern.cc/

07:05 <f_[x]/h> Sucks

07:06 <f_[x]/h> well none of us are in contact with vern anymore

07:06 <f_[x]/h> I cut communications by leaving their irc channels

07:07 <f_[x]/h> I see cobra from time to time but we don't really talk anymore.

07:07 <f_[x]/h> I was sick of the psflt/vern drama

07:07 <f_[x]/h> anyway..

07:08 <runxiyu> woah

07:08 <runxiyu> local university has ipv6 now!

07:08 <f_[x]/h> Archive all the things?

07:08 <f_[x]/h> s/\?/!/ ; thanks on-screen keyboard

07:09 <runxiyu> what psflt/vern drama

07:09 <f_[x]/h> you probably don't want to hear about it

07:09 <f_[x]/h> or maybe you do

07:10 <f_[x]/h> that'll be for later

07:35 <Danct12/h> runxiyu nice

07:36 <Danct12/h> we have ipv6 for a while but not many people use it..

07:36 <Danct12/h> :P

07:37 <f_[x]/h> IPv6 is sadly still not widely used :(

07:37 <f_[x]/h> need to set it up myself too, vps supports ipv6 but I only use ipv4 atm

07:38 <Danct12/h> i have ipv6 but i completely disabled it on my desktop

07:38 <Danct12/h> because i cant stand that one

07:56 <f_[x]/h> android scrollbar ftw

08:01 <JAA/h> I'm regularly in a place where I can only do IPv6. It's annoying how often I come across sites that have IPv6 but it's entirely broken.

08:49 <runxiyu|m/h> All of my networks other than my school's has good IPv6

20:17 <JAA/h> f_: Eh, I mean, you could also just run irssi or weechat or whatever on the machine you're running The Lounge on for the duration of the maintenance. When I last looked at the TL install docs, it was a bit of a process (adding a user and whatnot). For irssi, you'd probably want to change the nickname, and then you're good to connect.

20:18 <JAA/h> `ircdog` or whatever would even be 'good enough' for that though. :-P

20:19 <JAA/h> Or the one from suckless that I keep forgetting the name of.

20:19 <hax[xor]> said TL instance is being run on runxiyu.org (or andrewyu.org, idr which, though I think the former) (not that f_ couldn't run one from there, but it's not f_ running it, nor f_'s server)

20:20 <JAA/h> Ah

20:26 <Danct12/h> moin

20:51 <f_/h> JAA: yeah andrewyu.org just happened to have a running TL so this is what I used.

20:51 <f_/h> and yes I could've ran a weechat

20:51 <f_/h> on andrewyu.org, that is. In fact I have weechat preconfigured to connect to rx

20:51 <f_/h> but whatever
